DistributionKnown only from Granville County in the Piedmont and Pitt and Duplin counties in the Coastal Plain. Specimens from Wake and Orange counties are from cultivated plants.

Native of the Neotropics.
AbundanceVery rare.
HabitatTrash heap, waste place, roadside outcrop.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting May-November.
IdentificationElegant Zinnia is a simple plant with opposite ovate leaves and a single large head of red florets (ours usually "double").
Taxonomic CommentsA synonym is Z. violacea.
